It is well known that people living with Severe Mental Illness (SMI) are at a higher risk of physical health problems. The life expectancy of people with SMI is 15-20 years lower than the general population, they have double the risk of obesity and diabetes and three times the risk of hypertension than the general population, and estimates suggest that two in three deaths are from physical illnesses that could have been prevented.
Since July 2021 GP practices in Newcastle and Gateshead have provided an Enhanced Service of annual comprehensive health checks for people with SMI to try to address these inequalities. Involve North East was asked to gather feedback from patients who had received a check after July 2021 to understand their experience and help identify where timely adjustments to the health check process could be made, in order to improve patient experience and uptake.
Patients/carers could share their views via an online survey which was promoted by practice staff, and a link provided in their invitation letter and post-health check care plan. The survey was also promoted widely by local voluntary and community sector organisations whose service users fit the target group, or who may come into contact with this cohort. 33 patients/carers provided feedback on their experiences.
